hearphones to light up a led!

That’s what I’ve done in two endless days:

advice for blondes: you don’t have necessarily  invest two days of your life to make the same sound sensor but just a bunch of minutes if you are well concentrated.

(If you want just see the tutorial and skip the story behind -and of course you’re a man if you don’t mind the story behind- go to Arduino for man| Tutorials)

    BreadBoard, this stranger.

I don’t have an immediate solution to understand what a breadboard is and how it works.

take the breadboard in your hand, touch it and turn it, explore it until you feel confident with it and start to use it.

I can just suggest you  some slides I made (available on Slideshare )

    breadboard for blondes

and a cool video on Youtube.

    Hope this can help!

    first date with Arduino

    Arduino

That’s how Arduino came into my home just a couple of days ago, bringing with it a lot of stuff and claiming for some new clothes.

This  small case is very catchy  and makes you want start immediately. But once you opened  it you’re in front of a different scenario,  your first thought is to assemble all this pieces of plastic scattered everywhere,  trying to figure out what all this mess is about.

Let’s say that a real blonde first put her name on the case ( a beauty case for her), so everybody will know that Arduino is her man.

As  said before Arduino is a spoiled child and it wants to play only with his friends. I mentioned Processing but that is just a name on the long list.

Let’s start to say that for running Arduino you first have to download the software at http://arduino.cc/en/Main/Software-you can also find that directory from the main page at http://arduino.cc– as you’ll see there’s an Arduino version for all the Operating Systems including Linux.

For Linux Users: you have to check out if your settings are right, see you if the repository Multiverse is running and then install the packages sun-java%-jre, gcc-avr and avr-libc. Then from shell write sudo update-alternatives –config java. Download Arduino, extract the folder and keep on using the shell enter in the directory (i.e. cd Desktop) then in the folder (cd arduino-0017) and then launch the program with: sh Arduino.

What you’ll see is an ambient based on java very similar to Processing. That is where you write all the codes to communicate with Arduino,REMEMBER TO TICK THE BOX IN TOOL->SERIAL BOX, and plug Arduino by its USB.

Other Arduino’s friends you’ll need sooner or later are:

    • third hand
    • multimeter
    • soldering
    • tin
    • cable
    • metal scissors
    • cutter
    • cutting math
    • metal rule
    • glue

    ..and more.

Arduino’s language is very similar to Processing so I suggest you to being familiar with it to better afford Arduino .

There are good guides and books around to getting start with Arduino as:

    http://www.arduino.cc/en/Guide/HomePage First step
    http://www.arduino.cc/en/Tutorial/HomePage Some Tutorials
    http://blog.craftzine.com/archive/2007/08/how_to_getting_started_with_ar.html at Craftzine.com
    http://www.scribd.com/doc/7623505/Arduino-Notebook-v1 Arduino Notebook form Scribd.

or if you’re a paper nostalgic you can have a look at the book: Getting Started With Arduino by Massimo Banzi.

    here some of my disasters:

To get to Arduino you’ve first to know its friends

We started the category introducing Arduino, but Arduino has some friends and believe me it is really attached to them and it is not going to work without some of them.

One of them, or at least the first you have to socially know is Processing and …what is processing?

same question same answer..quoting the official site:

“Processing is an open source programming language and environment for people who want to program images, animation, and interactions. It is used by students, artists, designers, researchers, and hobbyists for learning, prototyping, and production. It is created to teach fundamentals of computer programming within a visual context and to serve as a software sketchbook and professional production tool.”

Guess we’re  one of the guys mentioned up there, I like to call myself a designer but because is becoming very common nowadays I actually prefer being considered a “student”..is an evergreen to me.

Arduino for Blondes: not because blondes are stupid but because we’re all blondes

Here we are in this new adventure.

First of all i want to explain the title of the category.

Arduino for blondes. I’ve nothing against blondes, some of my friends are blondes and I’ve learned to live with their disease :P. The things you’re going to read in this part of the blog are just ‘blondes standard’ just because are written like a blonde would do.

I’m not blonde, but i feel like my approach with Arduino is absolutely  blonde, and i hope what you’re going to read will help you to understand more of this still unexplored world.

This is technology  as I see it. Excuse my poor slang and have a laugh to all my unusual explanations and reality based mistakes.

    Take Arduino Less Serious!

    So what is Arduino?

Well I’m not very good with technical explanation so i’m going to leave the place to an authoritative quotation:

    http://arduino.cc

Arduino is an open-source electronics prototyping platform based on flexible, easy-to-use hardware and software. It’s intended for artists, designers, hobbyists, and anyone interested in creating interactive objects or environments.

Arduino can sense the environment by receiving input from a variety of sensors and can affect its surroundings by controlling lights, motors, and other actuators. The microcontroller on the board is programmed using the Arduino programming language (based on Wiring) and the Arduino development environment (based on Processing). Arduino projects can be stand-alone or they can communicate with software on running on a computer (e.g. Flash, Processing, MaxMSP).

So to me is like a blanc paper to fill with your ideas to communicate with everybody around you but before you can use it in an efficent way you have to learn the native language.

It’s not easy, but the future is open and at the moment Arduino is the future.

I’m not going to bore you, so I’m not going to explain in details Arduino’s features and how it works, for this kind of explanations I prefer  address you to these rich and influential articles: from Wired, Make:, Arduino Official Webpage and in a real blonde style we cannot forget Wikipedia, the official blondes’ resource Wikipedia Arduino. Make: is my favourite because also you can find there videos and guides made  by the users to use Arduino, I don’t know the color of their hair.

If Paris Hilton would read one of those articles mentioned before, probably she would spend interminable minutes wondering about what a Micro-controller or a single board micro-controller is (well i did it too ..Paris!) you can have a look at the links, as always from Wikipedia.

As in real life I’m good with pronunciation but I’m a disaster with the grammar…so..I’m going to fail a lot and i will try to use my hand at the best to make things more clear.

For all the other incomprehensible terminology, be patient, we’ll have time step by step to explain everything.

From now to the next days our goal is finding the X, and draw an arrow and a circle will not be enough.

Etichette: bad experiences, cpanel, free services, hosting, information., knowledge, netsons, wordpress

i’ve just learned the troubles of being poor for the web

    Welcome to I’ve just learned.

I’ve just learned the troubles of being poor for the web.

Money makes the world run and from what we’re used to see makes run the web too.

See websites as Wikipedia or Last FM or even WordPress asking money for the cause or for make you a privileged user it’s became something common for me- and above all something I can live with it- BUT  I’m still surprised every time I fall in this huge black hole of free services and bad experiences.

I’m not talking about the open source or the completely free services, I’m talking about that web sites that offer you basic services for free or super services under payment or just the second option, and i don’t want attack anybody (even if the web is a battlefield) i know that we all have needs and in this case i need some  stuff and they need my money for keeping on giving that stuff. Cool. The circle is closed.

We’re learning that internet is not the paradise they tell, but it’s a kind of representation of the world we would escape while we’re in front of a computer: there are the cool guys and then there are the losers. You don’t have to be a genius to understand that being a cool guy is better than being a loser, even if usually are the losers the ones that use internet more.

What’s bizarre to me is that when unfortunately you are in the Losers’ rank and you are using a basic service what they have denied to you, is not just a tool,  or a button,or the access to a special area, they’ve just denied to you “orientation” and consequentially “knowledge”. Yep, I think that the probabilities to get lost with a basic service are more than with a payed service, even if – I guess (guess..there’s nothing more I can do )- you should be more confused  with the second one since they’re offering you more  :P.

Having less and having worse.  Have one of the two isn’t enough?

The item you’ve been looking for is just there, one click far from you..apparentelly.

If you are a basic user forget a complete and reliably support from the website, you ‘ve to googlin’ and walk-through blogs and communities to find the closest solution to your problem, the closest is not always the right one (a Linux user knows what I’m talking about). You must be a master with the mirrors sites and very patient with the basic features.

The main choice you have is to buy or.. you’re not going to find other valuable choices, but what’s ridiculous to me is that the payed features are always there, just after you’ve clicked you get to know that you have to pay for that you spent hours to choose..like a WordPress theme!

Deny the access to something or makes more difficult the way to access to information is denying access to knowledge and for our mind is like denying food. I made a mess with Netsons and WordPress last night I spent half an hours try to understand how to have a free domain and many others try to move myself between Cpanel, WordPress, Fantastico and all the blogs I visited just because there was not a clear explanation to my question.

After a while I’ve discovered that the guide I was following was wrong because the blog was not updated, and the other info from a community were not exactly the same as I was looking for. I’ve cancelled the website, and tried with another domain and then cancelled also that one because I need to work on a specific name.

that’s why I’m so upset with this topic, is just because this lack of money  -> this lack of information ->this lack of knowledge-> and finally this lack of chances to learn is pushing me one step further form what I want to do: improve myself.

    That’s all.

At the end  I just want to say that I’m sorry if you don’t like my WordPress theme, but if you give me the money I will change the CSS! Promise!  😀
